# User Metrics Over Time

This report contains user metrics that make sense for the site holistically, rather than for individual URLs. It shows monthly, weekly, and daily figures that answer the following questions:

1. How many new users visited the site?
2. How many total users visited the site?
3. How many sessions were there on the site?

You can filter the report by:

1. Date range
2. Media

It's generally quite common for the three graphs to have similar shapes, though you will occasionally see some spikes in, say, sessions, but not users or new users if people have a reason to go back to your site over and over on a particular day or week. Here's what the report looks like:

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://hitsubscribe.gitbook.io/home/osiris/traffic-analytics/user-metrics-over-time.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
